Ponzi: Volume 1 KICKSTARTER!

This was our first time going to Manga Next and it was great. The artist alley staff was very helpful and pleasant and so were the people sitting next to/around us. Usually we get 6 foot tables, but this time we got a three foot because unfortunately we were a little late on the whole letter of intent. Even though it was half of what we usually have, we made it work really well.

To the right of us sat Dave Roman, he was really friendly and we loved his work with Astronaut Academy and several Avatar comic books. We had a good time chatting with him about many things from comics to other cons to musical tastes.

To the left of us was Gary, a.k.a. Bubba, who had a great set of prints and 2 volumes of his Demon Fist series. Across from both of us were the awesome Samantha and her boyfriend, who are a great duo running Cyber-Scribe-Screens making a great assortment of character squids and T-shirts. I got a zombie squid myself and I was very satisfied with it. It apparently was so satisfied with me that it stuck to the top of my hat for the rest of the day without falling off, I should probably check if it was sucking my brains out. We all chatted about many things under the sun, including the idea of squid-chucks, which I hope will see the light of day.

Last but not least on the awesome people we met at Manga Next has to be Jen Lee Quick, the writer and artist of the popular Off Beat OEL graphic novel series. We made quick friends and gained a lot of knowledge about the publishing world. I myself had never read Off Beat before the convention, but after a straight reading of the two available volumes while she chatted with Kate Rhodes, I instantly became a fan and I’m craving more of that gripping story. We commissioned Jen Lee Quick and she drew us Oliver and Thelm and they came out insanely awesome, emphasis on the insane, since Kate and I seem to have a knack for creating mentally unstable characters. We loved how they came out.

Our chibis sold very well at Manga Next, I’m happy that our old school anime chibis sold better at this con than at NYAF, just goes to show you have to know your audience. Commissions went well as well, everyone loved their chibi portraits. Two of our favorite cosplayers that crossed our table was one lady dressed as Katara from Avatar the Last Airbender, with an amazing water bending effect with the use of a silk scarf, and the other was a person cosplaying Wander from Shadow of the Collosus, who purchased a little Valus from us and also took a picture with one of our colossal sized Valus chibis with a fearsome gleam.

All in all, the convention was amazing and we had a really good time. We hope to share the con experience with more people, and to meet up with some of the people we met at Manga Next at future cons as well. Our next con on our schedule is going to be Anime Boston, and we are going to be at table S47, so go check us out there! We’ll be promoting our Kickstarter for Ponzi Volume One, which we are going to launch very soon! We hope our readers will like the animated video we worked on, it’s going to take them back all the way to the beginning of chapter 1.

Ponzi Updates!

We’ve been working hard and we finally have Ponzi Volume 1 in production to be published. We hope to have all your support! To mark this occasion we will be updating Ponzi in the comics section with our 4 newly redone pages in full color. We hope you’ll enjoy the totally revamped pages as much as we enjoyed making them. NYAF 2011 Play – by – Play! Pigtail Style

Once again another con, another detailed post. Don’t worry, it’ll be worth it.

So this year Pigtail Studio launched a new project which is con-exclusive. They’re called Chibi Dollz based on little chibis that one of our artists (Kevin R.) started to draw last year for Ponzi. For more information on them go to our new page dedicated to them at the top right corner! We worked very hard on them 2 months before NYAF and surprisingly we got more done than we even planned for. Anyhow we worked long and hard up to the very day of the con. Unfortunately we had a plague by the name of, let’s call her the studio’s red headed sister, hit us and we all fell sick whilst working on the final hours of our little creations. Thankfully we recovered before/during the convention so we didn’t collapse.

After no sleep for most and much rushing, we finally got to the convention and started to set up. Well, we would have had 3 hours to set up and recuperate but unfortunately the con (see nyaf itself) was somewhat….disorganized that Kate and I (Lilimon here by the way) had to go around the con for about 2 hours trying to get information on why we apparently didn’t have a table on the list in front of the entrance doors to the artist alley. In the end they gave us one of the blank tables in the back and we set up camp. As fate would have it we ended up near the women’s bathroom. If any of you remember from last year’s nyaf, we were near the women’s bathroom as well, just on the opposite side.

The next 3 days of the con went by in a bit of a blur. We did very well with our chibi dollz, but our original work also sold as well. We’re working on having more prints and such for sale at our other cons; most of the prints up were by our lovely Kate Rhodes, because her work is amazing and she had a lot available to put up. Many people loved our chibis and we were very happy that they were taken very well. What we were selling were essentially bookmark/key chains. I had compiled a small catalogue of all our chibis in the form of what someone would do with a TCG collection with a binder, which worked out very well. Good thing I could use my obsessive TCG days for something useful now.

Ah before I forget to mention, I was cosplaying the 11th Doctor from Doctor Who (The Matt Smith version). I whipped up the outfit in about 2 days so it wasn’t really all that great, but I felt really happy wearing it. Just so you guys know, it might become a thing with me for cons. What does that have to do with anything you might ask? Well, one of our biggest chibi dollz sellers were actually the doctor who chibis that we created. Kevin had done the lineart and I colored them myself with lots of love and detail. Other chibis that sold out a lot were from Naruto, Bleach, and Zelda.

Side note: Don’t forget to leave us chibi suggestions in our shoutbox or email! We’ll love to get your feedback and will consider adding what you guys want to our collection.

Now where was I, oh yes! The chibis. Well ti wasn’t all about the chibis. We were very happy to find a large number of people interested in our original work as well. Hopefully they will grow in numbers because that’s what our con-going is all about. To promote ourselves and the studio using our talents. At some cons we’ll actually be showing our animation as well, probably the cons that give us free electricity because we can’t afford to pay for it. As for the convention itself, we made out very well and were able to cover all the money we spent on supplies and such. Lots more people know about Pigtail Studio so I think we pretty much achieved what we set out for. Once we got back we all had a nice dinner together and promptly passed out at our studio base.

Be on the lookout for our upcoming projects now guys! Not only are we going to try to make it to more conventions now (Keep your fingers crossed, we need those tables!) but we’re also working on bigger and better projects for you guys to enjoy. First on the list is Ponzi. We’re going to be working on publishing our first volume of Ponzi very soon and it’s going to look, mind my language, kickass! We’re going to start a Kickstarter sometime in the near future for it, we can’t do it without you guys! So watch out for that. Also Pigtail Studio is working on a new, very high quality anthology full of self-contained stories and artwork in the future. This is a very new project and we just started on it, so wish us luck and ask any questions you like. We’ll keep you posted. There’s also a secret project the studio has been working on for a bit now, it’s very under wraps, but between you guys and myself…. *looks around* we’ll call it project AW (for awesome? Maybe.) Project AW is a new animation the studio is going to work very hard on, we’re going to put a lot of love into it and when we’re done with it, it’s sure to be a very high quality piece of film. Keep your eyes peeled, we’ll slowly be leaking more info about it, but for now…hush hush.

So that about much covers it. We hope you guys enjoyed us at the con, for those who visited. Keep checking back here to see what conventions we’ll be going to. So far the only confirmed table we have so far is for Mocca fest at the end of April 2012 in NY. In the meantime keep using our shoutbox or email us, we love having contact with our fans! IT’S US! Pigtail Studio is back in action for Con season. We have lots of new things to update all you fans on.

Comics, comics, more comics, animation, and some fanart on the side. It’s been confirmed that we have tables for both NewYorkAnimeFest/ComicCon and MoCCA! Both are in our hometown of New York so if anyone of our fans are going to either, we encourage them to stop by and chat! It’ll help motivate us while we work hard to complete all the commissions we’ll be doing.

We’ll have lots to offer this year! Not only will we have StoryArk available for anyone to buy, which has many of our comics including Ponzi and the comic adaptation of M.B’s Reila, but we’ll also be doing commission portraits! We’ll have both chibi doll styles or regular portraits available and both styles look amazing. We’ll also have a nice catalogue of fan art chibi dolls of things ranging from Slayers to K-On to Doctor Who to Zelda! We’ll have a great selection to choose from if anyone wants a little chibi doll for themselves. We’ll also be looping animation that the studio has made around along with a cool demo reel. All the soundtracks are done by our very own Kate Rhodes.

So make sure to come by and see us! We’ll be very happy to see our fans. More info on exactly which table we will be at will be updated later, so keep watching!
